Was about 500 words in doing a fill for [livejournal.com profile] spn_masquerade and no I'm not saying which prompt :p and my laptop froze. Couldn't even copy the text to paste into another doc and I didn't think to write it out longhand before I did the only thing I could -- a cold reboot.

Now I have to try to recreate what I had written and I just know it's not going to be as good. Oh well, lesson learnt, I suppose.

On a slightly happier note-- Welcome back Windows 7!!!! I have missed you so much and am so, so sorry for dumping you for that awful Windows 10 upgrade. Will promise to never do that again!!!

awww!! That is terrible, every single time! It takes a long time for me to get up the strength to write over when that happens. Every limb in my body just gives up! But it's not always for the worst. Even though the original story might be lost, there is a possibility you might create something even better. You can do it!

I hate when that happens, too. See my comment at the bottom of this page for how I have solved the problem.

That's a good idea. In my case, I don't lose my computer files too much any more because I have them on Cloud. The problem is LJ posts, which I have lost many times from simple errors on my part to LJ problems. I try to save a copy on Cloud in a word document to avoid this, but not always :P

I don't lose computer files, I just have unexpected lock-ups sometimes so I have figured out a way to save my LJ entries as I'm writing them. I frequently do long entries off line in Word then cut and paste into LJ. Haven't done that recently though.

I'm normally really paranoid about doing frequent back-ups when I'm writing and have all my writing programmes set to auto-update every couple of minutes. However this fic was new so I should have saved it after just a few sentences which would then trigger the auto-backup feature but I was so in the zone of writing it that I forgot. Won't ever do that again!! way too stressful, esp when the fic was turning out really good.

OH NO!! :(
Perhaps it will be better for the rewrite?

Well, that's answered that question, I will not be going for the upgrade.

I have begun re-writing the fic, using as much as I could remember that I really liked and adding a whole lot more and I'm really happy with the result so far.

I'm glad I switched back. My laptop is a lot more stable now, was always freezing and crashing. Whether that was because of it's age (about 4 years old now) or because it just couldn't handle Win10, I don't know. just glad I've got my ol' gal, Win7, back again.

I'm so relieved that you're happy with your 'new' fic :D

It's too frightening a concept to think about.

Oh, man, I wanted to kick the damn thing right across the room but somehow resisted and took the dog for a walk instead to calm down.

What's worrying is when there's a blip like that...Who knew we had so much of our life on the computer...Little worrying! I have been given SO many heart attacks over the years! This is why I back up constantly, lol.

I know!!! had a massive panic attack today when I realised that in switching back from Win10 to Win7, it had somehow deleted months of saved emails even though I had closed my email programme before doing the switch, including all my confirmations for hotels and flight tickets and (this was the absolute worse) all my PDF tickets for the 2 SPN cons, gold tickets for both and multiple Jared, Jensen and J2 photo ops.

Rang my ISP to see if the emails were still on their server but nope!! Lost in the internet ether, never to be found!!! So I've been busy all afternoon emailing everyone (Creation, the Marriott in Denver, the Sheraton in Pasadena, 2 different hostels) I've booked something with and asking if they can resend confirmations and PDF's. Luckily I had saved my 3 Greyhound bus tickets to my hard-drive so I don't have bother chasing them up as well.

Once I get them (IF I get them) I will be saving everything to a thumb drive or 2 as well as printing everything out in triplicate!!!!

Oh gosh, I hate when that happens. The longest entries I've done in years have been my write-ups about catching up with Supernatural. Since I've lost more things than I care to think about, I periodically copy what I've written, paste it into an email and send it to myself. That way at least if my computer freezes, I won't have lost ALL that I've written.

You are the first person I know of who doesn't like Win10 . My husband and two friends love it. What don't you like about it? I'm planning to do my upgrade sometime in the coming week, but before I do, I'd appreciate knowing what you don't like about it.

I didn't like the overall look of it. Was either so dark or way too much white space around my browser window.

I hated the new integrated browser, Edge mainly because I couldn't have my all my home tabs open at once, like I can in Internet Explorer so I kept using IE which isn't really compatible with Win10 so it kept freezing and crashing.
