Was about 500 words in doing a fill for [livejournal.com profile] spn_masquerade and no I'm not saying which prompt :p and my laptop froze. Couldn't even copy the text to paste into another doc and I didn't think to write it out longhand before I did the only thing I could -- a cold reboot.

Now I have to try to recreate what I had written and I just know it's not going to be as good. Oh well, lesson learnt, I suppose.

On a slightly happier note-- Welcome back Windows 7!!!! I have missed you so much and am so, so sorry for dumping you for that awful Windows 10 upgrade. Will promise to never do that again!!!

awww!! That is terrible, every single time! It takes a long time for me to get up the strength to write over when that happens. Every limb in my body just gives up! But it's not always for the worst. Even though the original story might be lost, there is a possibility you might create something even better. You can do it!

I hate when that happens, too. See my comment at the bottom of this page for how I have solved the problem.

That's a good idea. In my case, I don't lose my computer files too much any more because I have them on Cloud. The problem is LJ posts, which I have lost many times from simple errors on my part to LJ problems. I try to save a copy on Cloud in a word document to avoid this, but not always :P

I don't lose computer files, I just have unexpected lock-ups sometimes so I have figured out a way to save my LJ entries as I'm writing them. I frequently do long entries off line in Word then cut and paste into LJ. Haven't done that recently though.

I'm normally really paranoid about doing frequent back-ups when I'm writing and have all my writing programmes set to auto-update every couple of minutes. However this fic was new so I should have saved it after just a few sentences which would then trigger the auto-backup feature but I was so in the zone of writing it that I forgot. Won't ever do that again!! way too stressful, esp when the fic was turning out really good.
