Don't know if there is anyway to embed a Tumblr post here (if there is please let me know how) so here's the link to and a cut&paste of something that I couldn't agree more on and couldn't have said better myself.

Today I got a reply to a comment saying that the author had been so discouraged by the lack of response on the last two chapters that they had decided not to finish it, but that they had changed their mind and were now thinking of finishing. Just because I took 30 seconds to comment on each chapter.

It doesn’t matter if the fic is years old

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to say (“I loved this” is always music to an author’s ears, no matter how many times we hear it)

The author will not think you’re a creeper if you’re commenting on every single one of their fics

The author WILL cuddle your comments close to their hearts like the precious gems that they are, even if they’re only one word.

Comments and feedback matter. I’ve written in fandoms and for pairings that have very active, vocal fans who comment a lot, and I’ve written for ships that are not terribly popular and don’t get much reaction. The difference in my attitude is incredible.

Your feedback matters to authors. Click the kudos button, but please, take the time to leave a comment. Even if it’s just one word. If you like the writing and want to see more, let the author know

Please do not hesitate to give me your feedback guys! Be it positive encouragements or constructive criticism, I’m always open to everyones opinions ❣

Whilst I love getting kudos on my fics at A03, it saddens and discourages me more than a little that a few of my fics have zero comments. I'm assuming readers like my stories enough to bother leaving a kudos but I would love to get comments (even just a few words) on WHY they liked it, which parts worked and even which parts didn't, would they like to see more??

Just in case anyone would like to make my day and leave even one "I loved it".
My Fic on AO3

Yes! While of course nobody's obliged to leave a comment, I really miss LJ-style comment culture now that fandom is so dominated by AO3 and Tumblr. The best kind of feedback is the kind where you end up having a conversation with someone, IMO.

Yes!! It's amazing how a simple comment from a reader can spark an idea in my brain.

Wow, I so much agree with this. Everybody gets discouraged and wonders if it's worth it or if anybody really likes what they write. Just a single short comment can make all the difference! Lately I've been reading stuff that was posted years ago by authors who seem to have left the fandom and never answer, but I tell myself it doesn't matter because someone, somewhere may really need that little piece of confidence, and who am I to withold it? Especially after enjoying the gift they've just given me with their writing? Just a simple thank you is so important sometimes, even if you think nobody cares.

I'll comment on a story I like no matter how old it is. Being a writer myself I know how nerve-wracking it is to just hit the POST button. Knowing someone else is enjoying what you are writing is the best boost I can think of.

I must admit that, while I always used to try and comment on fic when it was posted on LJ, I do tend to just rely on the kudos button now when it comes to AO3 :( I suppose I feel like I should be writing more than "I really enjoyed this fic" type of comments that I used to leave on LJ fic, just because I feel like the kudos button says that anyway, so I always see comments on AO3 as being there more for if you have lengthier comments to make. But I'll keep this in mind, and try and start writing comments as well

While I love, love more in depth feedback, just a "I really enjoyed this" comment or "thanks for writing" this is still wonderful to receive.

I totally agree with you. For ages now it's always disappointed me greatly when people wouldn't take the time to give feedback for my stories. I used to be on Yahoo groups for certain fandoms. I'd post my fic chapters at one of them and I'd never get feedback, meanwhile this other girl would get practically everyone giving her feedback. I'm also on AO3 and I get a lot of kudos, but hardly any comments at all. :( It can be so discouraging. Do you know if the majority of people leaving you kudos are anonymous or does it show their screen names? I've received a lot that were anon and it made me wonder if people were too lazy to log in.

Anyway I read your latest fic - the Red Meat one - and not only did I give you kudos, but I left some feedback. I really enjoyed it. :) If you want to check out any of my fics, please do so. I've written for various fandoms but I have a few SPN fics there too. I could always use feedback. :)

I always thought the ones listed as guests don't have accounts (therefore no user names). Even getting kudos gives me a thrill but someone taking a minute to tell me WHY they liked it is simply wonderful.

Will definitely check out your fics. I'm procrastinating packing the house by reading lots of fic at the moment.

I know, I've seen it and thank you so much for doing that :-). Am slowly working my way through responding to comments.

It takes all of five seconds to say, "Loved it!" on someone's work, I know I'm quite bad at replying to everything my flist post, but I do try and keep up and leave some love!

You are brilliant at leaving feedback and comments. Always get a thrill when I see notifications from you in my e-mail.

Yes, all we writers might need to keep going is a simple "I liked/enjoyed/love it" comment.

I will always write primarily for myself but I post to share with others.

*hugs* Glad to know I make you grin hun :) ♥
As someone who's primarily an artist in fandom but has been writing a lot longer, I know how it feels to get very little feedback or interaction on stories, but I've come to the realisation that I'm posting mainly for me, for my own personal record, if people like it or wanna comment, that's a bonus.
