Ouch, that hurt.
Sep. 14th, 2014 12:44 pmThat really, really hurt!!!!
Wow, they really aren't holding back on portraying 'Black' Jack Randall as the brutal, sadistic bastard that Diana wrote in the books. I'm not usually squeamish but I could barely watch when he was flogging Jamie, even though quite a bit of it was offscreen. It really was horrific, so much more so than what I'd imagined when read those scenes years and years ago. Now I want to re-read them and see if they were as brutal and bloody as what the show gave us just now.
The flogging scene was bad enough but then when BJR attacks Claire I nearly lost my breakfast. It was played so well by both actors, perhaps too well, as I felt like screaming in sympathy with Claire, only I didn't have the breath for it. And then when he orders the soldier to kick her, that's when I started crying.
As much as those scenes were almost too hurtful to watch, it gives me hope that they aren't going to dial back the horror and sexual sadism of Randall with Jamie in Wentworth Prison towards the end of the season. I'm a sick puppy, but those scenes are probably my favourite out of the entire series to date and I can't wait to see them brought to life on the screen.
And then Jamie came along at the end of the episode to make it all seem a little better and lighter and I had a smile on my face when the credits rolled. I love, love, love that they kept the lines about each other being bothered by the others sexual experience (or lack thereof)

HOLY HELL! Kudos for realisim, that's for sure! I'm really glad they didn't lessen the graphic nature of that particular scene. Had they done that, it would've downplayed Jamie's ordeal and subsequent state of mind, and that wouldn't've been true to the story.
BJR was wonderfully bastardly in his demeanor and his interactions with Claire and his "superior" officer. The moments leading up to Dougal barging into the room were actually more shocking than the flashback; the junior officer forced to obey and participate. Cait did a fantastic job with her acting in this ep, 180 degrees of emotional upheaval, and she pulled it all off beautifully.
I liked the whispered exchange between Claire and Dougal before she goes to assist the wounded soldier. I liked that he called her "Claire" and that she showed concern for his safety amid the revved up redcoats. It showed the progressive development between them that occurs in the books.
The scene at the spring was nicely done, I like that Claire's hair was down and resembling the book's description of it. The way the weight just drops off Claire's shoulders with Dougal's acceptance of her story was tangible and well acted.
I did think the chat with Jamie back at camp was rushed, so a little disappointed with that. Perhaps a couple of extra minutes in the ep could've been devoted to that moment, being that it's such a pivotal scene. Jamie's acceptance of his and Claire's situation was both sweet, noble, and funny, because we all know he's more than happy with gaining Claire for his own. And THE line was in there! *dances* but then again, they probably would've been lynched by fans everywhere if it wasn't.
Fabulous place to end it too, the looks on the mens' faces was priceless. :D

Date: 2014-09-14 11:41 am (UTC)I really didn't want to watch that flogging scene but I made myself (well, I was facing away from the screen for most of it but still). I was imagining a lot more blood from the book. I didn't mind that they didn't do that though :P
I agree about the future scene - they have to do it - but I'm not going to like it. I'll probably be hiding my eyes the whole time. I did not really like the scene between Claire and Jack. Waaaaay too much talk. I liked the book version better. But then I'm pretty sure he slapped her on the face in the book. I guess they couldn't do that.
Agree about the last scene too! a breath of fresh air! and the lines they kept. Awesome.
